Data Interpretation: why volume beats tricks, and the clock problem nobody practises
Whether to write the data down is not a rule you can be handed — it is pattern recognition built from Clerk-level volume first. And arithmetic plus DI competing for one clock is a problem solo practice completely hides.
Three doubts about Data Interpretation, arranged in the order they usually arrive: what to do inside a set, where to start once basics are done, and the problem that only appears when DI and arithmetic are fighting over the same clock.
Should I write the data down or solve directly?

The honest answer is that not every DI set needs the data written down, and not every DI set can be solved directly either.
Experienced aspirants are not following a fixed rule here. They are recognising the type at a glance — and that recognition comes from volume, not from a trick anyone can hand you. Which means the real fix for a beginner is not learning when to write. It is building the pattern recognition that makes the question answer itself.
That means volume, at the right level:
Do not jump straight into PO-level DI. Start with Clerk-level DI — SBI Clerk, IBPS Clerk — and set a target of 100 to 200 Clerk-level sets. Roughly ten to twenty a day, inside about ten days.
That volume is what trains your mind to recognise, without thinking about it, when data needs arranging and when it does not.
Then move up in order, rather than jumping to the hardest level:
- Clerk Prelims DI
- PO Prelims DI
- Clerk Mains DI
- PO Mains DI

Basics are done — where do Mains Quant and DI start?

Topic-wise first, then mixed. In that order, and the reason matters.
Go topic-wise for the DI types you have not seen much of:
- Arithmetic-based DI
- Caselets
- Missing-data DI
Mixing everything before you have built individual comfort just recreates the confusion you are trying to solve. You cannot tell whether you struggled because the DI type was unfamiliar or because the switching was hard, and so you learn nothing from the attempt.
Once each type feels familiar on its own, move to mixed sectional practice. That is what actually trains the exam-day skill: switching between DI types under one timer.
On choosing whose course to follow
This question usually arrives attached to another one — whose lectures should I use for this stage — so it is worth answering the general form of it.
Give a teaching style four to five days at this stage, not four to five weeks. If it genuinely clicks, one focused week is usually enough to get comfortable with Mains-level Quant and DI. If it does not click after four or five days, switch — and switch quickly, without spending another week deciding.
Teaching style is personal. A style that works for someone else and not for you is not a verdict on either of you, and treating it as one is how people lose a month to a course they already knew was not working.
Arithmetic finishes alone and never finishes in a mock
Arithmetic can be completed fully when practised alone, but when a mock also requires attempting DI, arithmetic doesn’t get fully completed — and the same happens in reverse.
Arithmetic alone mein poori ban jaati hai, mock mein DI attempt karne jao to arithmetic puri nahi hoti, aur vice versa.
This is not an arithmetic problem or a DI problem. It is a section-level time-budgeting problem, and it only shows up when both are competing for the same clock — which is exactly why solo practice hides it completely.
Standalone arithmetic practice has no shared deadline pulling attention away, so it finishes fine. In a mock, you unconsciously over-invest time in whichever one you reach first, or whichever one you prefer, and that eats what was left for the other.
The fix is to practise them together, deliberately:
Run mixed arithmetic-plus-DI sectionals with a time split decided in advance. For example: a hard cap of X minutes for DI first — since DI time is more unpredictable per set — with whatever remains going to arithmetic. Not solving in whatever order feels natural in the moment.
The specific skill being trained here is stopping one thing and switching to the other on a clock, even mid-flow. That is uncomfortable, and it is the whole point. Solo practice in either topic, however much of it you do, will not build it.
What ties these together
Volume before tricks. Individual comfort before mixing. And a clock in the room while you practise, because the clock is what the exam actually adds.
