Puzzles are a reading problem before they are a logic problem
Most beginners assume puzzles are hard because of the logic. The real skill is accurate reading — and the reason the same puzzle type takes 1:30 one day and 3 minutes the next is not random.
Three reasoning doubts about time. Not one of them turns out to be about reasoning ability — they are about how the question gets read, and about a per-type method replacing generic effort.

Most beginners assume puzzles are hard because of the logic. The real skill is accurate reading, not speed and not even logic.
Misread one statement and the entire puzzle goes wrong, no matter how strong your reasoning is. So read every line carefully and make sure you have understood it before you start solving. Speed comes naturally with practice once the reading is accurate — not the other way round.
On choosing which puzzle to attempt first, two habits do most of the work:
Do a clue-counting first pass. Before committing to any puzzle, read only the fixed, certain clues in each one. The puzzle with the most direct clues upfront usually has the least guessing built into it. That is a ten-to-fifteen-second scan that decides the next four minutes.
Set a hard cap on any single puzzle. If it crosses roughly double your average solve time with no real progress, leave it and come back. One puzzle eating the whole section is the single most expensive thing that happens in a reasoning paper, and it happens because there was no cap, not because the puzzle was unusually hard.
Miscellaneous topics and large sets are slow
Miscellaneous reasoning topics take too much time, and larger sets are also slow.

Miscellaneous covers a mix of sub-types — blood relations, direction sense, ranking, inequalities — and time usually balloons because each type is being solved with generic effort instead of a fixed, type-specific method. That forces working memory to hold everything mentally, which is both slow and error-prone.
Standardise one habit per type:
- Blood relations — sketch a small family tree. Do not track names in your head.
- Inequalities — convert words to symbols (
>,<,=) the moment you read them. - Direction sense — mark a simple compass and plot each move as you read it. Do not visualise it.
None of these are tricks. They are all the same move: get the information out of your head and onto the paper, so that working memory is free for the actual reasoning.
For larger sets specifically, resist solving question-by-question. Extract all the given information into your diagram first, in one pass, then answer every question off that single diagram.
Re-reading the passage for each question is usually the real reason large sets feel slow. Not the reasoning.
The same puzzle type takes 1:30 one day and 3 minutes the next
Sometimes a puzzle solves very quickly, within 1:30 minutes, but the same type of puzzle other times takes up to 3 minutes. What should be done about this inconsistency?
Kabhi puzzle 1:30 min mein ban jaata hai, kabhi same type ka puzzle 3 min le leta hai, kya karein.
This inconsistency is usually not random, and that is the useful part.
Puzzles labelled the same “type” — circular seating, linear arrangement — can still differ a great deal in how many fixed clues they give upfront versus how much conditional, branching logic they demand. That hidden difference is what actually drives solve time. Not the type label.
A 1:30 puzzle probably had several direct clues that pinned positions early. A three-minute puzzle of the “same type” probably had fewer fixed clues and more conditional statements requiring you to try branches.
The fix is the same first-pass clue-counting habit from the first doubt above: spend fifteen to twenty seconds scanning a puzzle’s clues before diving in, and flag it mentally as clue-rich or clue-light.
This will not make every puzzle take the same time — nothing will, because they are not the same difficulty. What it removes is the surprise. You go in knowing roughly whether this is a 1:30 puzzle or a 3-minute puzzle, and you can pace the rest of the section accordingly.
